All About Ants

Pest Control AntsGeorgia is home to over 95 Species of Ants and is one of the states that suffers the worst from ant infestations. Most ants are not a hazard to people and are in fact some are an important part of the ecosystem. The most common form of ants in Georgia are generally acknowledged to be Argentine ants (Linepithema humile).

Argentine ants were inadvertently introduced to the United States in the 1880’s and are one of the most invasive pests around. One of the good things about Argentine ants is that normally large numbers of them die in the winter. However, with mild winters this fails to happen.  Another cause of infestations is dry weather which causes these ants to come indoors seeking moisture and escape from the heat.

Carpenter ants are one of the largest species of ants found in Georgia and are identified by their size (up to 3/8” long) and their black and yellow coloring. Carpenter ants earn their name by chewing wood to create nesting space. These house ants often create nests in moist wood found around dishwashers, bathtubs, skylights, door frames and crawl spaces. Carpenter ants are most active at night and create permanent trails to nesting locations.

Fire Ants, are red and up to ¼” long are well-known in Georgia for their painful sting and for building large, reddish, mounds. Fire ants are extremely active during the day and at night when they search for food and defend the colony’s nesting mound aggressively. While fire ants usually keep nests outside and only enter homes to search for food or water (during the summer), they have been known to establish nests inside homes. During dry seasons or after floods fire ants will relocate and build nests inside the walls of the nearest house or behind any large appliance.
